Bungie already working on new engine for Activision game

14 September 2010

Halo: Reach is out today, and review scores have been impressive so far. With the game barely out of the gates, developer Bungie is already working on a brand new engine for a game that it is developing in collaboration with Activision.

Speaking to Develop, Bungie studio communications manager Brian Jarrard revealed that the studio will not be licensing a third party engine for the new game. It is thought that Bungie will be involved in its upcoming franchise for the next ten years, so it makes sense for them to build a basic engine which they can adapt over the years.

“Just like we don’t want to develop a game off someone else’s IP, we want to push our own technology in the same way. That’s going to be our position for the foreseeable future,” said Jarrard.

Bungie has been credited with creating one of gaming’s most successful franchises; Halo. Whilst Bungie’s Halo days are over, we can expect continued development of the Halo franchise for as long as Microsoft is still around.
