Clemens Schneidhofer of JoWooD Entertainment describes digital rights management (DRM) as “a tightrope walk between user friendliness and security of the product.” This was especially evident with some controversial releases over the last year, such as the Assassin’s Creed II, Silent Hunter 5 and Settlers 7 titles, all from Ubisoft.
The single player experiences of these titles were tarnished and criticized for overly protective DRM that occasionally rendered games unplayable, and lost game progress when a permanent connection to the Ubisoft verification servers could not be maintained. Hackers also targeted the servers, adding an extra headache for gamers and publishers alike.
“ArcaniA: Gothic 4 is different,” explains Schneidhofer. “We [plan to] deliver a high-quality product gamers will enjoy playing for hours. This … should not be disturbed by intrusive copy protection measures. So SecuROM is the perfect solution for us because it offers the necessary security and at the same time it fulfills our high expectations concerning customer-friendliness.”
ArcaniA: Gothic 4 can be installed on an unlimited number of PCs and only needs to be activated once via the Internet. The game can be played on up to three PCs at a time, and neither the original disc nor a constant internet connection is needed. This is quite a flexible system that should please PC gamers.
A release date verification system is in place, so eager players can download the game in anticipation of its release. The game will also feature a user friendly update feature that will notify gamers of available updates and only begin downloading when permission is granted.
