Following Steam’s migration to the use of our local currency, the Rand, for South African users of the digital distribution platform, it was noted that a number of games are no longer purchasable.
Valve has said that it should be a temporary issue, one easily solved the moment those games are priced locally, in ZAR, but no dates were given.
According to Valve, “No changes have been made to the contents of your library. All of the languages and features in the games that existed when the store was priced in USD are still available.”
It’s reassuring to know that it doesn’t affect any of our currently owned games, and perhaps even more fortunate for Valve that it hasn’t seem to have affected Fallout 4.
It’s safe to say that if we had lost access to Fallout 4 owing to the migration, however brief the loss may have been, we would not be happy gamers – we may very well have broken out the proverbial pitchforks and torches.
For those wondering, we’ve compiled a list of some of the games currently unavailable for purchase on Steam locally:
Tales of Symphonia
Full Bore
The Evil Within
Kentucky Route Zero
Gang Beasts
Desktop Dungeons
Samurai Gunn
Project Zomboid
The Standley Parable
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Fallout 3
Fallout: New Vegas
Tiny Barbarian DX
Ikaruga
Final Fantasy III
Super Puzzle Platformer Deluxe
Planetary Annihilation
7 Days to Die
Card Hunter
JumpJet Rex
Vagante
Mystik Belle
Slain!
A Pixel Story
Grey Goo
Sproggiwood
Puzzle Quest 2
ARK: Survival Evolved
Starbound
Don Bradman Cricket 14
We can guarantee the list is quite a lot larger than that, and it’s more than likely that any franchises that contain the games mentioned above will be affected entirely.
Fallout 4 remains unaffected while Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are, but that seems to be the exception rather than the rule.
Fortunately there are no major Steam sales going on at the moment, not unless you count the Steam Machine Sale. It’s hardly a large sale by Steam’s standards, but it does contain some solid titles. Also, all of them are available for purchase in SA.
Speaking of which, we hope for Valve’s sake that this issue is solved by the time Steam’s inevitable Christmas Sale hits.
And is anyone scratching their head at Desktop Dungeon, a South African game’s, unavailability? Other local hits like Broforce and STASIS, on the other hand, are ready and waiting for you to pick them up. And trust us when we say that they’re well worth a purchase.

Wolfenstein: New Order and Old Blood also don’t seem to be available.
