No one is expecting the PlayStation 4’s virtual reality (VR) headset, the PlayStation VR, to be cheap — it comes with its own additional processing box and the optics it uses are still pretty cutting edge stuff.
You can imagine, then, that those eager to buy into virtual reality were a little shocked to hear that Amazon Canada listed the PlayStation VR headset at $1,125 Canadian, or about R13,000 thanks to the tanking Rand.
That’s an outrageous cost; we can’t imagine Sony ever charging that much, and thankfully the price was pulled.
Analysts predict a more reasonable price range between $400 and $600 American, and early adopters are almost certainly cheering for the former.
Now, listings by a few European retailers, the prices and screenshots of which can be found on a NeoGAF forum, suggest the headset will cost between €450 (R8,300) and €500 (R9,200). That’s not exactly cheap.
No one saw the Oculus Rift’s price coming, even in spite of what many retailer listings were suggesting, so this is far from a confirmation.
That said, we don’t imagine the PlayStation VR is going to cost significantly less given what’s going into it.
