The Wi-Fi Alliance standards body has added new features to its 802.11ac specification that promise up to three times the speed of existing Wi-Fi devices, reports itnews.
The new specification, Wi-Fi Certified ac, introduces wider channel ranges (up to 160 MHz), which equates to double the spectrum today’s 802.11ac devices use.
In addition, more channels in the 5 GHz spectrum (which is less congested than the more popular 2.4 GHz) and a fourth spatial stream have been added.
The new standard also includes Multi-User Multiple Input Multiple Output (MU-MIMO), which allows more devices to connect to the Wi-Fi access point and send and receive simultaneously for better throughput.
The first products from Broadcom, Marvell, MediaTek, Qualcomm and Quantenna featuring the new standards will release in the next couple of months.
