Say what you want about video games, visuals sell products and when a game looks good, we want it. The current generation of gaming is in its third year on the market, and during its time, we have seen some great looking games.
Every now and then, a new game comes along that ups the standard when it comes to visual appeal. These are the games that have done so in recent years.
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
There is no doubt that Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is possibly the best looking PS4 game of all time. The game takes us through dense jungle and massive open safari terrains, and every time we went to a new location, we could not help but just stare into the distance in awe.
The game even has a timer for all those moments when you just stood in one place to look around. The game also included a photo mode, so you can take photos of yourself in-game and cherish that moment forever.
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End also managed to keep the visuals up to standard in the most intense moments in the game. Every chase scene and every action packed moment looked great.
The Witness
The Witness is one of those games that you play once and remember forever. The game is set on an island where you have to solve grid puzzles, but the puzzles aside, the island is the main attraction here.
Each of the islands is a new location with a unique setting and feel, from a greenhouse to a Japanese-inspired garden. I do not know how the developers pulled it off, the game is an absolute visual marvel from beginning to end.
Not only does it look amazing, but there are so many hidden gems in the game which showcase the game’s beauty, such as reflections in the water or even hidden images made from rock faces.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
When you think of an open-world RPG, you think of overrated visuals with sandbox-styled quests and a boring equipment system. Well, the Witcher 3 came along and changed all that completely.
I have never experienced anything as rich and magical as The Witcher 3 in my gaming career. Every step you take in the open world is welcomed by a vast landscape with its own unique climate and dynamic weather.
The developers really worked hard to make it possible to travel to anywhere you see in the distance. It will be a long time before someone kicks this game off top spot.
Batman: Arkham Knight
Sorry PC gamers out there, but this does not apply to you. Besides all the issues that PC gamers had with Batman: Arkham Knight, the PS4 was the shining star when it came to how well the game performed and looked
Batman: Arkham Knight re-invented the superhero genre with its breathtaking open world, beautiful visuals, and action packed Batman moments.
Gotham City looked fantastic in the game, with rain effects blurring the background and giant billboards glowing in the distance. Rocksteady really went all-out to make one fantastic looking game that really showcased the world of Batman, and for that I say well done.
Dark Souls III
When Bloodborne released last year, we explored the city of Yharnam, and it looked absolutely stunning. This year, we got to venture into Dark Souls III and explore the world in all its glory.
Dark Souls III had an amazing open world to explore as you travelled from one bonfire to another, killing and dying along the way.
If anything, the locations and bosses in Dark Souls III were the pinnacle in the series.
The game has its identity nailed down, and I could not help but feel drawn into the world as I explored the dungeons and castles of Anor Londo.
The Order: 1886
Sure, The Order: 1886 might have failed at its goal of being the best new IP from Sony, but you cannot deny that the game had its fair share of visuals.
The game is set in London during the industrial revolution, and the Knights of the Round Table are a group of people who hunt down creatures threatening the city.
Saying that, the game is more a cinematic experience than anything else, as its 6-hour campaign is like a movie.
From start to end we are drawn into the game and its spectacular visuals, from its facial animations to its gorgeous environments.
Ready at Dawn really did a great job at imagining this alternate history, and although it was short, it was sweet.
What games do you think have brought the best visuals to the industry this generation? Let us know in the comments and forum.
