Telkom will launch a residential wholesale open access fibre broadband product on 1 December 2014. The company revealed its fibre intentions in its interim results presentation on Monday, 17 November 2014.
The company added that the first fibres will be lit and Telkom will have a fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) presence in 23 suburbs by the time it launches.
Telkom’s chief operating officer Brian Armstrong previously said that if the commercial launch of FTTH doesn’t work in its initial roll-out areas they would have to relook at their approach to home fibre in South Africa.
Previously Telkom said there were 26 suburbs around South Africa in Gauteng, the Western Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal where it would be offering home fibre services.
However, Telkom recently revealed that it had scrapped plans to continue its FTTH roll-out in Parkview and Parkhurst.
This came after the two affluent Johannesburg suburbs awarded bids to Dark Fibre Africa (Parkview) and Vumatel (Parkhurst) to roll out their own open access FTTH networks.
