Vumatel, the fibre infrastructure provider for Parkhurst and Parktown North, announced towards the end of October that it had rolled out its first Gigabit per second (Gbps) fibre connections to homes in Parkhurst.
Among the first people to get 1Gbps fibre connectivity in Parkhurst was Paul Butschi, one of the managing members at Cool Ideas: an Internet service provider (ISP) offering services on top of Vumatel’s network.
Butschi conducted some speed tests using Ookla’s online Speedtest.net system, which yielded impressive results.

Asked why he wasn’t seeing the full 1Gbps download speed, Butschi said the outcome of the test depends on the upstream bandwidth available to the server, as well as the size of the peering links between ISPs.
“To be honest, most ISPs won’t have much more than 1Gbps between each other as it stands,” Butschi said.
We asked Butschi to do a test to an international server, but he said that their international bandwidth was managed per session, so speed tests don’t usually do them justice.
Without a speed test to give an idea of what the average experience on the line is like, we instead asked Butschi how he found it.
He said that the latency was great for online gaming, with both local and international pings pretty much as low as they can go.
