The Spike VGAs are upon us, and this means we get not just a kickass awards show but also a ton of new information and announcements from some of the biggest names in the industry. It may all seem a bit daunting, so courtesy of CVG, here’s a rundown of the big announcements to look out for:
Epic’s new IP
Don’t expect a Gears of War clone attempting to cash in on the same market, president Mike Capps says this is going to be something completely different – in fact, he’s scared. “It’s something radically different for us. New IP, new game. We’re not really talking much about platform or anything like that, but… it’s been really refreshing to the team to try some new things.”
Bioware goes to war
Bioware has been flooding a ton of announcement teasing, with what looks like a modern-day war game. Some of the more out-there speculations include a new Command & Conquer title, although it’s not where I’d be putting all my chips. With just a day left till we know for sure, it may be better to sit this speculation out and just wait and see.
MGS: Rising – we’ll be getting something
Kojima Productions’ is promising “the latest” news on the latest incarnation of their golden goose, which is a lot better than their previous “nothing”. According to Kojima, “It’s moving forward, but it’s different from Metal Gear up to this point.” Expect controversy.
A decent Transformers game appears
The sequel to Transformers: War for Cybertron, Fall for Cybertron gets its big reveal, promising many “changes and improves” on the original, which wasn’t half-bad.
The PS3 exclusive everyone is talking about
It’s the most speculated and talked about reveal on this list, PS3 exclusive The Last of Us. The hype train was already rolling along nicely, but the furnace has been stoked after a possibility of Naughty Dog development was uncovered – hype so juicy it got its own article on MyGaming.
Alan Wake sequel
The sequel to the highly anticipated original will be an XBLA release, which got heavy criticism from surprised fans who see it as a major step down. Remedy say that’s nonsense however, arguing the game will be just like a full release, with a great storyline to boot.
Tony Hawk is at it again
The skating games of Mr Hawk have kind of fallen in on themselves and died with fancy peripherals and disappointing releases turning the franchise stale. Tony himself has announced a Spike VGA reveal over Twitter, saying, “I’ll be announcing the upcoming release of something new on Sat; the same day as the Spike Video Game Awards. Coincidence? I think not.”
THQ has something exciting to talk about
THQ boss Danny Bilson claimed he’ll be announcing a “very exciting” new game this month, and what more appropriate time than the Spike VGAs? We’re expecting something good, Danny.
Mass Effect 3 and Hitman: Absolution
While both these games have already been announced, the Spike VGAs come bearing new trailers, just in time for Christmas. How did Bioware know I’d been a good boy?
Bioshock Infinite, duh
The little we’ve seen looks gorgeous and intriguing, so hopefully we get some more insight into the characters and the stories with some sweet new video content.
My Spider-sense is tingling
While these are starting to feel a bit recycled, the die-hard fans will be happy to hear Activision’ll be showing off their latest Spidey game.
