Crystal Dynamics, the developer responsible for the new Tomb Raider reboot, as well as two undisclosed IPs, has today (26 January 2012) announced that there will not be a version of the game for the Wii U.
In the developer’s Crystal Habit podcast, Global Brand Director Karl Stewart is quoted as saying, “When we started developing the game we made a conscious decision that it was all about building the game for a platform and making sure the game was specific to that platform. Given that we’ve been working on the game quite a while before Wii U was announced I think it would not be right to try and port it across. If we started building a game for the Wii U we would build it very differently and we would build it with unique functionality.”
Sorry prospective Wii U fans.
In news that’s near and dear to my heart, Stewart has also assured fans that there is a collector’s edition in the works.
However, “The editions may be unique to specific territories…because some areas have restrictions and so on,” said Stewart.
My good man, if CD Projekt can ship a solid bust down here while Bethesda manages to pull off a pointy-edged dragon in a crate, then whatever restrictions you come across can go hang.
Nobody wants a second-rate almost-collector’s edition.
On the plus side, Mac users won’t be left out in the dark as discussions are taking place with “a company.” Ominous, isn’t it?
Fortunately, it’s not speculative but the poignant question remains: when is this game launching?
