Battlefield 3 custom console servers likely in SA

Playing games the way they’re supposed to be played is boring, and that’s why I always play Unreal Tournament CTF on Facing Worlds with low gravity, Berserk, and Instagib on – it’s not just more of a challenge, it’s basically impossible, and that’s scientifically 6.2x more fun.

With this obviously in mind then, DICE has announced they’re bringing in customisable servers for console versions of Battlefield 3. Okay, so they probably don’t have options for low gravity, Berserk, or Instagib, but you can dump the USAS and that’s cool too.

DICE announced via the Battlefield Blog that along with the planned expansion packs and large updates, they “will also add a much requested feature: a fully integrated  rent-a-server program for console players. We will detail this program  fully later, closer to launch.”

“All active players out there playing on consoles today will now have the opportunity to customize their servers and set them up exactly how they want them to play,” said Magnus Troedsson at GDC last night. “Now this is a feature that in Battlefield on PC we’ve had for some time, but it’s an absolute first on console. So, we’re pretty excited about this.”

We asked local gaming service providers if they’d be getting in on this action when it’s available.

Jonathan Smit, iGame online manager said “If the server system is available to us for hosting, we would host it. There is a great interest locally in console servers and we would be interested in hosting any such server instances as may be available through DICE. We are watching the situation and will have a clearer picture once DICE confirms if these servers will be available for hosting in our territory.”

Smit added that the customisation options are numerous, such as map lists, vehicle spawn delay, health regen, killcam and ticket count, to name but a few. Smit clarified that these are options available to PC servers based on the policy of the Ranked Server Provider, and there is not yet confirmation on what will be available to console players when the update drops.

Jeremy Rundle, MD of TechGames.co.za (formerly HypeGamez) said that they are definitely looking into hosting console servers once the DICE update has been rolled out. He also indicated that dedicated rental agreements will be in place for any console-based clans.

Desmond Kurz, MWEB GameZone manager said that “MWEB GameZone in the past has been quite clear that they are willing to work with publishers and developers who wish to host console servers for the players in South Africa. To this end, we welcome the announcement by DICE and will look for every opportunity to take part in the program.”

WAGE, SGS, IS Gaming and RIGaming were contacted for comment but were not able to respond by the time of publication.

Watch this space as MyGaming will keep you up to date on news of Battlefield 3 console servers.

UPDATE:WAGE Games Master Robert Tait has said that “Due to the increase in demand for console servers, WAGE would be more than happy to provide the local console gaming community with Battlefield 3 servers. Considering the news only reached us yesterday, we are unable to provide a definite answer regarding a Battlefield 3 game server rental service. However, we will announce it once the update has hit us. On that note, we have never ventured into the console server side before, but it’s certainly not too late, and it may just change – but for now, we’ll wait for more information.
