The Xbox 360 has been around one year longer than the PS3, selling around 7.1million more consoles.
2008 however, saw very even sales figures between the two consoles. The PS3 shipped 10.77 million consoles over the year, while the Xbox 360 nudged ahead with 10.8 million. Of course the Nintendo Wii outsold the Xbox 360 and PS3 combined with a total 24.84 million units in 2008.
Microsoft is generally quick to punt the fact that they have outsold the PS3, but considering the 1 year head start it got, 7 million consoles is really not that much.
Considering that the PS3 retails significantly higher than the Xbox 360, it comes as quite a surprise that it managed to keep up with Microsoft’s console in 2008.
In fact, the PS3 managed to outsell the Xbox 360 in 2008 right up until the last quarter of the year (Oct-Dec). Microsoft managed to sell a massive 6 million consoles over this period while Sony pushed just 4.46 million.
High Christmas sales can be seen as reflective of a younger audience, as this period generally sees an increase in “youth targeted spending” across most industries.
The fact that the Xbox 360 is a fair bit cheaper also makes it a far more attractive purchase for parents looking for something to stick under the Christmas tree.
Finally, we cannot help but wonder how the two company’s sales figures would compare if it weren’t for the Xbox 360’s high failure rate. Forums across the globe are awash with reports of users on their second, third and even fourth Xbox 360 consoles after experiencing the dreaded RROD.
