Sneak peek: Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X

9 February 2009

Included in the early showing was Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X, an arcade/flight-sim hybrid set in the not too distant future.

On first viewing, it becomes immediately apparent that H.A.W.X is one of most visually impressive games we have seen on a console. Expect highly detailed textures, beautifully rendered vapor trails, along with azure blue oceans and realistically rendered scenery.

The maps in H.A.W.X have been rendered using real world satellite photographs, and it shows.

In short, the game is looking incredibly slick.

The Enhanced Reality System (ERS) is a handy tool that assists new players with flight controls. It guides pilots, showing optimal aircraft interception trajectories, similar to how many racing car games project the most efficient line to take when navigating corners.   It will also warn of incoming missiles, and alerts pilots to imminent collisions. The ERS also allows players to issue orders to their squadron and other units.

In Assistance mode, pilots will be given a zoomed out view of the action, and planes will be granted far more maneuverability. This mode is straight up arcade action and pilots can literally perform back flips with their jetfighters at 1500KMs an hour. It is admittedly a little bit ridiculous, but it is also a lot of fun.

The campaign will feature a jump in co-op ability, allowing players to at any point jump in and participate in a mission with a friend. Through the course of the campaign, players will receive experience points and money, as well as the ability to unlock new weapons.

H.A.W.X is a very slick looking action arcade flight-sim. Players can customize realism settings, allowing for a straight up action arcade experience or a more realistic simulation.

There are over 50 aircrafts to be piloted in H.A.W.X and operations take place in various realistically rendered real world locations.

Based on the hands-on flight time we got with the Xbox 360 version, we can safely say that Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X is one to watch.

H.A.W.X is coming to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 and will arrive on March 31.
