More people will remember Crysis for its incredibly detailed graphics and impressive physics than for its compelling storyline or engaging characters. That’s because the only really outstanding thing about Crysis is the way it looks.
To be fair to the game, it does look absolutely incredible, especially when running at its highest settings on high-res with AA turned up. So what if most current computers can’t experience the game at its full potential, it is that potential that made headlines, and more importantly, the potential that Crytek showed with the CryEngine 2.
It has been almost a year and a half since Crysis pushed the boundaries in terms of video game visuals. There has still yet to come a game that we can all agree looks better than Crysis. Many have a preference for the visuals in games such as FarCry2 and Fallout 3, but the generally held belief is that Crysis has yet to be toppled from its throne.
It is in this context that we were pleased to hear that Crytek has announced that they will be showing the world its latest iteration of the CryEngine at this year’s Game Developers conference (March 23). The developer has stated that the third iteration of the CryEngine will target consoles. This is hardly a surprising move when you consider the limitations and boundaries of developing an engine exclusively for the PC. That is not to say that the engine will not be PC compatible.
The demonstration that Crytek has announced is said to illustrate the engine’s strength most notably in regards to itsmultiplatform capabilities.
It is the first development platform that is being developed to cater to the Xbox 360, PS3, MMO and DX9/DX10 platforms.
We can’t wait to see what CryENGINE 3 looks like, and are especially looking forward to seeing what it can do on the PS3 and Xbox 360.
