It appears that somebody at this year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) managed to record the gameplay demonstration of Bioware’s upcoming Sci-Fi RPG, Mass Effect 2.
The footage, which is currently all over the internet, gives us an early and rather detailed look into what we can expect from the game, which is currently being planned for release in January 2010.
We already knew that the sequel to 2007’s RPG of the year would see players stepping back into the shoes of Commander Sheppard in a quest that will take them “to the darkest reaches of space, where you must uncover the mystery behind the disappearance of humans across many worlds.”
The video however gives us the first look at what we can expect from Mass Effect 2’s gameplay.
From the looks of things, Bioware has been working hard tightening up on the game’s action elements.Combat now seems a bit more solid, and enemy as well as ally AI seem to have been improved somewhat.
The accompanying commentary points out that the collision and cover mechanics have been enhanced. These elements do seem to have been smoothed over, and from the looks of things, combat will be more fluid and intuitive than in the previous game.
One of the only real criticisms which Mass Effect received was with regards to its combat system. It looks like Bioware has been paying attention, and is aiming to provide an action experience that is comparable to more dedicated action titles such as Gears of War and the like. We noticed for example that players will now have to reload weapons, a small but telling modification to the combat system.
From what we can gather from the video, Mass Effect 2 is looking to take all the things that made the original such a success, and improve on the few shortcomings it had. If the developer manages to pull this off, then Mass Effect 2 is set to be an absolute classic.
