For one day every year, it is virtually impossible to believe anything you read online. This year was no different, and April 1 saw some of the best April fools prank announcements we have come across in years.
Here is a roundup of some of our favorites from the day.
Valve’s Pee throwing Sniper announcement
Creator of popular online first person shooter Team Fortress 2, Valve, announced yesterday that they will be introducing a new unlockable ability for its Sniper class, “Jarate”.
The new ability would allow players to throw jars of urine at their enemies. The phony update posted on the official website yesterday depicts the Sniper holding a jar of yellow liquid, with a caption reading “No worries, mate! 100% guaranteed made in New Zealand!”
Bioware’s prank Dragon Age video
Yesterday Bioware released a supposedly new trailer for their upcoming Dragon Age: Origins. This one really has to be seen to be believed. View Alfie’s War on MyGaming.
Blizzard goes to town
Not content with just one prank announcement, Blizzard made 4.
Firstly, the World of Warcraft developer announced that their massively popular MMO would be getting a new “Pimp my Mount” customization feature.
“Tired of your mount looking like every other raptor, wolf, horse, kodo, or nightsaber out there? Then Z to the A to the zzber (whew, that’s a mouthful!) will be glad to welcome you to his shop where you can epic-ize your mount with some phat total pimpage!” Reads the official release.
Then later on, Blizzard announced that they would be introducing a PvP Dance Battle System.
“As with the Arena system, close communication and teamwork is crucial–you’ll have to be in sync, both with the music as well as with the other members of your crew, to become the ‘server’ and not the ‘servee,'” read the official release.
Blizzard was not about to exclude rest of its games from the April fools festivities, and proceeded to announce that Diablo III would be getting a new class, the Archivist. Videos demonstrated the Archivist’s ability to wreak havoc with his spell book. The “Shush” spell was our favorite, causing noisy enemies to explode in the reading room.
Finally, Blizzard released a new video for Star Craft 2, which depicted a new Terran unit. The “Terra-tron” is a massive robot that is made up of an entire Terran base. The rather convincing video shows Terran buildings floating off the ground and assembling into one massive robot, and is well worth watching. See the Terra-Tron in action on MyGaming.
Microsoft’s “Alpine Legend” announcement
In a subtle dig at the Guitar Hero franchise, Microsoft announced that they would be releasing a yodeling and alphorn rhythm game for the Xbox 360.
MyBroadband announced a Seacom Delay
The accompanying forum discussion to MyBroadband’s announcement that Seacom will be delayed by cable theft is well worth a read. This prank earned points for being entirely believable.
