Last week it was reported that Take-Two had offered the defunct 3D Realms $30million for the intellectual property rights to Duke Nukem Forever.
Take-Two currently possesses the publishing rights to the game, however, without the IP rights it has no claim to the content that 3D Realms had developed up until the point of its closure.
George Broussard allegedly refused the offer, expressing his desire to finish the game. Apparently Broussard had been in discussions with a number of other publishers, trying to secure financial backing with which to complete the game. Even if 3D Realms were to secure enough funding to finish the game, Take-Two would still retain the publishing rights.
Shortly after these reports emerged, it was announced that Take-Two would be suing 3D Realms for not delivering Duke Nukem Forever before it closed down. The court action seemed fair enough, considering that Take-Two paid $12million for the publishing rights back in 2008 and ultimately ended up with nothing to show for it.
According to Shacknews, 3D Realms co-founder Scott Miller has denied ever having received a cash offer of $30million for the IP rights to Duke Nukem Forever.
“We would have taken this offer without hesitation”, said Miller, going on to say that the rumors are “Not.Even.Close” to the reality of the situation.
Miller also claimed that 3D Realms had been self funding Duke Nukem Forever since June 2006.
As the plot thickens it becomes more and more difficult to predict whether Duke Nukem Forever will ever see the light of day.
