Jonathan Blow, designer of the highly acclaimed platformer Braid, has revealed to Shacknews that he has entered into the development phase of a new 3D “puzzle exploration game”.
The game is described as being “a puzzle-exploration game that is philosophical, and quiet, and is being made for reasons other than crass profit motive.”
Blow’s job posting for a 3D environment concept artist shows that he is planning to walk well clear of the current trends in the gaming market.
“The majority of [your] portfolio should consist of things absent from the following list: Girls With Big Tits; Barbarians Wielding Axes, Covered in Blood; Aliens; Space Ships; Gangsters Getting Shot in the Face; Orcs; Giant Robots; and, of course, Postapocalyptic Wastelands.”
Braid was initially released in August 2008 on the Xbox Live Arcade service. Later a Microsoft Windows Version and a Mac OS port were released in response to the game’s popularity.
Blow self funded the project and created it as a personal comment on current trends in game development. It took three years to complete and eventually became the highest rated title on Xbox Live.
On a personal level Blow has often criticised the gaming industry, even going as far as to label World of Warcraft “unethical” due to its reward for suffering scheme which, according to him, keeps players in front of their screens.
