Spider Man director takes on WoW movie

22 July 2009

Blizzard has confirmed that the film adaptation of Warcraft will be directed by Sam Raimi, the man behind the recent Spider Man movies as well as the Evil Dead series.

The rumor originally surfaced when Aint it cool news published confirmation that Raimi had been chosen by Blizzard. Blizzard came forward later and confirmed that Raimi will be taking the helm in the project.

Blizzard announced in 2007 that Legendary Pictures would be producing the movie, but not much has been said since then. Legendary works alongside Warner Bros, and is responsible for a number of successful epic themed movies, such as Batman Begins, 300, 10,000BC, The Dark Knight, Watchmen and more.

Legendary announced at BLIZZCON that the budget for the World of Warcraft movie will exceed $100 million. Apparently Uwe Boll (House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, Postal) desperately wanted to direct the movie but Blizzard wisely declined the often mocked Director/screenwriter/boxer.

“Raimi has, in the course of his career, clearly demonstrated a genius for developing and adapting existing fictional universes for mainstream audiences while staying true to the spirit of the original content,” reads a Blizzard press release sent out yesterday.

Raimi responded saying “At its core, Warcraft is a fantastic, action-packed story,” going on to say “I am thrilled to work with such a dynamite production team to bring this project to the big screen.”

“From our first conversation with Sam, we could tell he was the perfect choice,” noted Blizzard COO Paul Sams. “Sam knows how to simultaneously satisfy the enthusiasts and the mainstream audience that might be experiencing that content for the first time. We’re looking forward to working with him to achieve that here.”

In typical Blizzard style, the Publisher stated that more details would emerge as development progresses, and we are expecting the movie to be released ‘when it’s ready’.
