EA earns more from PC and PS3 than Xbox 360

6 August 2009

EA recently announced its Q2 financial results, detailing revenue earned on different platforms.

Interestingly, the company made more money off PC title and PS3 titles than off Xbox 360 titles. The results come as a surprise due to the fact that Microsoft has outsold Sony in the console wars by around 8 million units to date.

A higher install base should naturally lead to greater sales, but it seems that EA managed to sell more PS3 games than Xbox 360 games between April and the end of June.

EA’s platform revenue rankings

1.    Nintendo Wii – $161million
2.    PC – $124 million
3.    Sony PS3 – $121 million
4.    Microsoft Xbox 360 – $73 million
5.    Sony PSP – $38 million
6.    Nintendo DS – $28 million

EA’s platform revenues look markedly different to Activision Blizzard who also recently released its Q2 financial report.

Activision Blizzard platform revenue rankings

1.    MMORPG – $324 million
2.    Microsoft Xbox 360 – $231 million
3.    PS3 – $151 million
4.    Nintendo Wii – $118 million
5.    Nintendo DS – $48 million
6.    PS2 – $44 million
7.    PC (excluding MMOs) – $41 million

Activision’s strongest revenue stream came from monthly World of Warcraft subscriptions, and the Xbox 360 and PS3 managed to outperform the Wii thanks to the likes of the Call of Duty franchise which enjoys massive success on these core gaming platforms.

EA’s top spot goes to the Wii thanks to the likes of EA Sports Active, Tiger Woods 10, Grand Slam Tennis and MySims Racing which have all performed well over the past few months.

EA also took in impressive revenues on the PC thanks mostly to The Sims 3, not to mention previous Sims releases that still manage to sell very well years after release.

The publisher took in $343 million in North America, $258 million in Europe and $43 million in Asia.

Activision Blizzard in comparison took in just over $1billion in worldwide revenues during the same period.
