According to Gamasutra Swedish developer GRIN, which has most recently been responsible for titles such as Bionic Commando and Terminator Salvation may be facing financial difficulties.
The studio reportedly implemented significant layoffs earlier this year and was forced to close its Barcelona and Gothenburg offices as a result of poor sales and negative reception to its titles. Additionally sources have indicated that employees at the company’s main office in Stockholm have been told not to show up for work and that the company may be undergoing insolvency procedures.
GRIN was established in 1997 and experienced a considerable rise in popularity and notoriety when it was handed responsibility for the PC versions of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. Since then it has grown to open up a number of additional offices worldwide and secure development deals with a number of major publishers.
Although the current economic climate is particularly harsh, the gaming world has not witnessed many development and publishing company’s experiencing bankruptcy or closing their doors.
The local industry is in fact thriving, despite slight drops in console sales numbers year on year a Megarom executive recently revealed that South Africa was enjoying as much as 27% year on year growth in the gaming market.
Although the closure of GRIN has not yet been officially confirmed, the lukewarm reception and poor sales that its most recent titles have garnered may be an indication as to what direction the company is heading in the near future.
