With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s release date inching ever closer developer Infinity Ward has given more details regarding the game and what they think of the FPS genre in general.
In a recent interview with Infinity Ward’s community manager Robert Bowling told Now Gamer that he is “most excited by games taking the genre and breaking preconceptions of what FPSs are and prominently redefining the experience around their style. We’re all about fast-paced team-based infantry gameplay, whereas Valve is doing an amazing job with Left 4 Dead of forging their own style of FPS that is all about co-operative and dynamic gameplay that you can play endlessly.”
Bowling cited Bethesda, responsible for the likes of Fallout 3 as a good example of a development team that can construct an interesting single player campaign.
“Just as much as I think a lot of people are innovating multiplayer, I think a lot of developers like Bethesda are really redefining the single-player first-person experience. Fallout 3 was a renaissance for single-player mentality and proved that multiplayer isn’t the end of great single-player experiences.”
Bowling also revealed that both the multiplayer and single player versions of Modern Warfare 2 has separate teams working on them from the beginning. If recently released game trailers are anything to go by the formula will arguably be a success which builds upon that which Call of Duty: Modern Warfare achieved.
The included co-operative gameplay, a mode which Bowling said has been in high demand amongst Call of Duty fans, will was a possibility which Infinity Ward took very seriously during development.
“The multiplayer always has mass appeal and the most vocal community. While single-player is as, if not more, popular in terms of unique users and casual gamers, they’re just much harder to track since they never get online and thus probably don’t participate in online communities. The co-op audience is a great hybrid of both audiences.” Said Bowling.
To date Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has sold over 13 million copies worldwide across all platforms. Publishers Activision and developers Infinity Ward will undoubtedly be hoping to better this when Modern Warfare 2 is released on November 10.
