New Dreamcast title announced

9 September 2009

On the cusp of the ill fated console’s tenth anniversary developers Redspotgames have announced a new title for the Sega Dreamcast.

Red Rush Rally Racing, a 2D arcade style racing game will be available on both eBay and Amazon in late October for $22 (R176). The game’s trailer boasts “No realistic backgrounds. No sponsored cars. Only fun, retro gameplay”. It has been confirmed that the title will feature ten tracks, five cars and three multi player modes.

What is less certain is why a games development team would be releasing a new title in 2009, bar the obvious nostalgic value.

The Dreamcast, which was designed by Sega to compete with the Playstation 2 and original Xbox, was released in 1998 but was discontinued internationally just two years later.

The console sold 10.6 million units worldwide and was highly regarded for its technological features which even included an onboard modem on some models.

Although the Dreamcast is no longer produced it is available in the second hand market and is supported by a number of ‘homebrew’ developers and games, Red Rush Rally Racing may well be one of these.
