Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love, has made it clear via her Twitter account that she does not approve of Kurt’s likeness in Guitar Hero 5.
Cobain features in two Nirvana tracks, ‘Lithium’ and ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, from the eponymous Nevermind Album. The avatar can however be featured in any song on the game which, in some cases, finds him moving awkwardly and rapping.
Twitter user Courtneylover79, who has been purporting to be Love for several months, posted over seventy ‘tweets’ regarding how she felt about the ability for players to unlock the avatar for other tracks in the game.
“FOR THE RECORD I DID NOT APPROVE KURTS AVATAR FOR GUYITARHERO5” said Love, who further suggests that Cobain would have despised the game.
In addition former Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic have released a joint statement regarding their opinion on the matter. The statement adds that they are “very dismayed and disappointed” to find that Cobain’s avatar could be used to play other songs on the game.
While we were aware of Kurt’s image being used with two Nirvana songs, we didn’t know players have the ability to unlock the character,” they said. “This feature allows the character to be used with any kind of song the player wants. We urge Activision to do the right thing in ‘re-locking’ Kurt’s character so that this won’t continue in the future.”
In a statement Activision responded that it had secured the rights from Cobain’s estate and Love herself to use Cobain as a fully playable character in Guitar Hero 5.
