NPD, a market research company which provides information on consumer trends, has released its report for console and games sales in August.
In terms of console sales the Nintendo DS outsold its competition by almost double:
Nintendo DS: 552 0000 units
Wii: 277 400 units
Xbox 360: 215 400 units
PS3: 210 000 units
PSP: 140 300 units
PS2: 105 9000 units
Year on year sales numbers indicated that only the Xbox 360 showed an improvement. Microsoft enjoyed a four percent growth in console sales between August 2008 and August 2009.
This did not carry over to other manufacturers. In the console market Nintendo saw the biggest drop in sales with the Wii declining thirty nine percent year on year. Sony’s PSP figures showed a fifty one percent drop in sales from August 2008 although this may be offset when the PSP Go is released internationally in October.
The biggest surprise was the PS3 with a twenty two percent increase in sales from July 2009. The jump could be attributed to the recent price reduction of PS3 models and the announcement of the PS3 Slim.
As MY Gaming reported earlier this week, the PS3 Slim has reinvigorated Sony Sales figures. In the last week of August PS3 sales doubled in the US and increased by thirty five percent globally.

In her report analyses NPD’s Anita Frazier added that “The price cuts implemented on the PS3 and 360 hardware already made an impact on unit sales, despite having been executed fairly late in the month. It will be interesting to see the full impact of the new price points on September sales.”
Despite the recent shake ups in Xbox 360 and PS3 pricing Frazier pointed out that the console market is still struggling. “The industry realized its sixth consecutive month-over-month decline, and while improved over the last several months, it’s still a notable decline. “
“All hardware systems with the exception of the PS2 realized an increase in unit sales over July. The PS3 captured the greatest increase month-over-month with unit sales boosted by 72% over July levels. “
