Whisperings of a price cut coming to Nintendo’s top selling home console, the Wii, are getting louder and more widespread.
Sony and Microsoft are both mixing up their home console line up as well as pricing, with the introduction of the $300 PS3 Slim and Xbox 360 Elite price cut so it will come as no surprise if Nintendo decides to reduce the retail price of its console.
While the Wii is praised by many for its innovative design and input method, others argue that in terms of raw processing power and features the console is not nearly as impressive as the HD-touting Xbox 360 and PS3. Xbox 360 and PS3 users can download movies and games, watch Blu-ray disks, listen to streaming audio and much more. In comparison the Wii is looking a bit dated.
Many argue that the console, which does not even feature a working DVD player (mods excluded) is due for a price cut. Of course fans of the console will argue vehemently that its innovative design makes it a worthwhile device. But no matter which side of the fence you find yourself on, most people will be pleased to learn of the price cut rumors.
At this point there are only rumors and ‘inside source leaks’ to go on, but if the last few months are anything to go by, it’s that in this industry, where there is smoke there is fire. With similar rumors emerging before the PS3 Slim and price cut as well as the PSP GO! and of course the Xbox 360 Elite price cut, it seems quite likely that once again the rumors will bear fruit.
A price cut from Nintendo would make sense as they have not reduced the console’s retail price since its launch. Unit sales have seen a slump over the past few months, with recent cuts from Microsoft and Sony further exacerbating the situation. When asked previously about a reduction in the price of the Wii , Nintendo famously replied that they cannot manufacturer the device fast enough to keep up with customer demand, and there is therefore no reason for them to reduce the price. Now that demand for the Wii is on the decline, a price cut from Nintendo would be a sensible move.
No details have surfaced regarding just how much Nintendo is likely to take off the retail price, but some rumors suggest that the reduction will not be as significant as many are hoping, with many predicting a $30 price reduction which will see the console retail for $220, still $20 more than the Xbox 360 Arcade.
The price cut is predicted to be announced in early October when all will be revealed, one way or another.
