With the year entering its final quarter, all eyes are on the imminent Christmas rush, most notably, Modern Warfare 2.
The sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a safe bet for 2009’s top selling game, and the primary reason for its immense popularity is the multiplayer component. While the game will feature a single player campaign, the majority of serious gamers are buying it so that they can play it online.
However, Modern Warfare 2 is not the only FPS still to be released this year that is promising killer multiplayer. The sequel to the Original Operation Flashpoint is due out early next month on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 and it looks as though it will deliver a solid multiplayer experience.
Considering that the previous Operation Flashpoint game was more of a sim than an action packed arcade shooter such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, many are expecting a slower, more realistic experience with Dragon Rising. Early footage and information however suggests that the sequel will be more accessible than its predecessor which means the pace may be higher and the general realism may be toned down.
Co-op campaign
Players will be able to play co-operatively though the entire campaign. It will be possible to enlist up to three marines which can be played by other online gamers. It will not be necessary to keep the same team throughout the campaign, and players can get different friends to join them in different missions.
Regular PvP
Of course there will also be a regular PvP (Player vs Player) multiplayer option, where players can play through various combat scenarios in traditional multiplayer format. As part of PvP, players will be able to play two different multiplayer modes; Annihilation and Infiltration.
These two additional multiplayer modes will allow players to play across the entire island of Skira, with teams starting on opposite ends of the map.
In Annihilation mode players want to remain as the last player standing at the end of the match.
Infiltration mode will be different, with one team tasked with the goal of holding a position, and the opposing team will play as Special Forces who must infiltrate and capture the location.
iGame is currently planning to host a dedicated Dragon Rising server for PC users, while console users will be able to host matches in the traditional console peer to peer format.
Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is planned for local release on all HD platforms on October 16.
