Samsung has been the sponsor for the local World Cyber Games qualifying rounds for a variety of games since 2001, including Counter-Strike 1.6, Command & Conquer 3 and Quake 3. This year Samsung will be branching out to include the qualifying round for Guitar Hero: World Tour on Xbox 360. This is the first time that Samsung will be hosting the qualifier for a console game.
The qualifier will be held on Saturday October 3 at rAge 2009. rAge is South Africa’s biggest gaming and technology expo as well as the country’s biggest LAN event. Tickets for the LAN event were sold out just days after they went on sale a few weeks ago, however, those interested in attending the expo can buy tickets at the door. Day tickets will cost R50 and full weekend passes will cost R80.
Samsung is sponsoring the competition and will be flying the winner to Chengdu in China where they can compete in the World Cyber Games Guitar Hero: World Tour grand final which will take place between November 11 and November 15.
The qualifier aims to find the best Guitar Hero player in SA so that they can compete with the world’s top competitive Guitar Hero players, such as 12 year old Dylan Phifer of Washington who holds the Guiness world record for the highest score ever achieved in the game; 1,019,000.
Players must be registered with AGASA in order to enter the competition. AGASA and Penguin International are working together with Samsung to organize the event.
