Wii update 4.2 causing hardware errors

Following a recently released firmware revision for the Nintendo Wii, a number of reports have emerged stating that the update is causing a number of issues.

Firstly, when performing the update, some users are getting an error report stating that their console has been illegally modified. This is happening to users who maintain that their consoles have not been “chipped”. Following the error message, the update freezes and it is no longer possible to turn the console on.

For those that have managed to install the new firmware, reports indicate post-update disk-read errors that were not previously present.

Nintendo has responded, urging anyone with an un-modded Wii that is experiencing these issues to contact their Wii help center.

Nintendo claims that they will fix any un-modded consoles that are found to not be working due to the firmware update, but it remains to be seen how this policy will be implemented locally.
