The rAge LAN report

A record breaking 2,162 gamers participated in the rAge LAN this year. This was made possible by a whopping 30km’s of cabling, along with 4400 power points and an 8Gb/s symmetrical link between the 1822 NAG LANers and the 340 competitive Telkom DoGaming LANers. 28 VC admins were on rotation through the weekend to ensure that the event ran as smoothly as possible.

Within 10 hours of doors opening, every rAge LAN ticket holder was seated.

Xerowing’s rAge report

The NAG LAN at rAge this year opened its doors to a crowd of eager gamers as the first day of the expo got underway.

Sign up and check in this year was a smoother affair than ever largely due to multiple testing stations which were made available at the entrance. Finding tables and setting up PC’s went smoothly as usual, with more than enough space available.

Unfortunately, as soon as the LAN got underway there were a number of technical issues, although these were no worse than what is usually anticipated at such large scale events.

Some sections of the LAN experienced early connectivity problems, with switches going down on a regular basis.

The Organizers did their level best to resolve issues and attend to any problems, and most of the gamers were up and running with little inconvenience.

Games of every description were played, from DOTA , right through to Hearts (seriously). There was even a farming simulator doing the rounds, although its name still alludes us.

The highlight of the event for many was getting to meet various friends and enemies from online gameplay, meeting up with clan-mates, and getting to know completely random strangers who all share a passion for gaming.

All things considered, the rAge LAN was an overall success, even with the small technical issues that prevented some from playing on the Network. While security personal could have been a little less Gestapo-like, one must appreciate that they were only trying to protect atendees and their property, although this was at times implemented in a very unreasonable way.

The organizers did an excellent job of maintaining order, and the cleaning crew and staff did a remarkable job of keeping everyone happy with access to clean bathrooms and tables.
