Wii takes back console crown in October

13 November 2009

Last month we reported that the PS3 had outsold the Wii and the Xbox 360 in September this year. The sales bump brought on by the PS3 price cut resulted 70% more PS3s sold in September than in August. This was the first time ever that the PS3 had been the top selling console over the space of a month.

Recent sales findings reported by research firm NPD show that Nintendo has retaken the top spot and outsold both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 in October. The increase in sales has been attributed to the recent Wii price cut which now sees the console selling for US$200 as opposed to US$250. South African’s saw a reduction on the Wii’s recommended retail price from R3500 to R2500.

Sony still managed to outsell the Xbox 360 in October, with their price cut and the introduction of the PS3 Slim continuing to drive sales.

October 2009 sales figures for all consoles are down in comparison with the same period in the previous two years. Aside from the boost PS3 received by the September price cuts, this is a continuation of the observed trend of decreasing year-on-year sales of all consoles.

September October
Wii 462,800 506,900
PS3 491,800 320,600
Xbox 360 352,600 249,700

October 2009 sales figures show a marked decline in sales for both Microsoft and Sony over the previous month, although the PS3 is proving to be more resilient. Only the Wii saw increased sales, a fact attributed to the price cut which occurred shortly before the beginning of October.

In comparison to October 2008, October 2009 saw the games industry slump significantly. 18% less games, 23% less hardware, and 2% less accessories were sold in October 2009. October 2008 yielded US$13.16-billion (±R98.03-billion) in revenue, while this year the month took in US$11.43-billion (±R85.15-billion).
