Ubisoft really tripped up at E3 2014 when it told gamers that putting playable females into games is super hard and “difficult to animate”.
But after the fallout, the Assassin’s Creed developers obviously want to make good and show off what they have in store in the way of female leads in the upcoming fifth installment in the series: Unity.
In a new trailer, we get a brief introduction to Elise, whom Ubisoft describe as “an independent young noblewoman” who is “determined to secure her place in the Templar dynasty amidst the chaos of the French Revolution”.
The trailer shows Unity hero, Arno (who everyone will play as) racing against time to save Elise from the guillotine.
While that sounds a bit damsel-in-distress-y, the trailer closes with Elise and Arno teaming up to tackle a whole lot of guards.
She seems more than capable – so I’m quite excited to see what she can do, and how her role as a Templar impacts Arno’s mission and motivations.
Assassin’s Creed Unity is pegged for release on 28 October 2014 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
