If you’re able to crank up the settings to their maximum, Fallout 4 is actually rather pretty, at least your immediate surroundings are.
That’s because of the way in which the Creation Engine handles the world around you, as cells.
If you imagine the world to be a massive grid, each plot of land within each square of the grid is a cell.
To ease the load of rendering a massive world, cells within the player’s proximity are rendered with more detail, and less and less as they get further from you.
That’s why one of the easiest ways to improve the look of any Bethesda game is to configure the game to render more detail for cells further away from you, more so than Bethesda prescribes – just as long as your PC can handle it.
So imagine if you could only see the cell your player currently inhabited.
A player going by YttriumTyclief was playing around with the game’s camera angles, only to discover just how well the game looks as an isometric title, reminiscent of Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 by Black Isle Studios.
“As I was playing around with camera angles and other camera settings I got inspired to take some isometric screenshots of what Fallout 4 might be like if it was made by Black Isle. Figured I’d share, so here you go!”
In fact, if Fallout 4 were an isometric title, it’d be the best looker by some margin.
And by mitigating aspects like the game’s iffy facial animations and dodgy textures off in the distance, it comes across gorgeously.
We’re so sold on this new POV (point-of-view), we’d happily play the entire game like this.
We’re huge fans of the original Fallout games, and the recent release of a number of solid isometric RPGs proves that the sub-genre is far from dead.
Weirdly, Fallout 4’s aesthetic and colour tone suits the isometric perspective rather well, without Bethesda ever intending it to we bet.
It would certainly make for an interesting mod, though we imagine combat would be rather difficult.
Imagine playing Fallout 4 from an isometric perspective and having all combat take place via VATs. Someone do that. Please.
That said, this POV does take away from one of the game’s strongest visual effects, radiation storms.
They’re a sight to behold, to be sure.
