EA is rebranding the FIFA Series

29 March 2022

The rumoured falling out between Electronic Arts and FIFA seems to be true, as a new report states that EA has internally approved the name change of their football games from FIFA to EA Sports Football Club (EA Sports FC).

This has been confirmed by an industry insider Jeff Grubb via VGC. Grubb claims that the decision to rebrand was discussed at the end of 2021, and the new name has now been trademarked.

“I saw trademarks for it, I thought that could be just a feature like an online mode, [but] I asked around about it [and] that’s it, that’s the name,” said Grubb.

The report of the fallout came at the end of last year, which suggested the change would be caused by a naming rights issue.

“As we look ahead, we’re also exploring the idea of renaming our global EA SPORTS football games. This means we’re reviewing our naming rights agreement with FIFA, which is separate from all our other official partnerships and licenses across the football world,” said EA Sports Group General Manager Cam Weber, back in October 2021.

With the trademarks for EA Sports FC out in the open, it’s a matter of time before we find out more. No other details have been released, and it is therefore not clear whether the change would take place in time to replace FIFA 23, or if it would be implemented the following year.

FIFA 22 is the latest EA Sports football game, and is currently available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
