With the proliferation of smartphones and tablet PCs, many gamers will find they now have a portable gaming device to keep them company when nature calls. To that effect, we bring you episode 3 of From the Bogs, featuring 4 cool mobile games that might just liven up your public holiday.
Pocket RPG (iOS)
Pocket RPG is an action RPG, made by Cape Town-based Tasty Poison Games, wherein you can play one of three classes (Blade Master, Dark Ranger, or Battle Mage). Your character can be upgraded after each mission with new skills, however your equipment gets left behind.
You make your way through each level, slashing, shooting, or blasting away at baddies, and collecting gold and equipment. It’s oodles of fun and totally worth the money.
Pocket RPG has recently received an update optimising it for the new iPad and it will cost you $4.99 for the universal version or $2.99 for an iPhone-only version. A free lite version is also available.
Unfortunately for other platforms Pocket RPG is iOS-only at this point.
Temple Run (Android & iOS)
In Temple Run, you grab a priceless artefact at the start and then you have to, well, run from the angry horde of damn dirty apes.
In your path are a whole bunch of obstacles that you have to dodge, jump over, or slide under, all the while collecting coins that can be used after you die to buy upgrades to help you with your next run.
It’s weirdly addictive, and at the bank breaking price of free on both iOS and Android, there’s no excuse not to give it a try.
Another World (Android & iOS)
Another World (for Android and iOS) is a port of the 1991 cinematic platformer of the same name. Controls have been modified to work smoothly with touch screens, and higher resolution graphics are available, but the rest remains largely unchanged.
The style and narrative aren’t for everyone, but those looking for a true blast from the past should definitely check it out.
Another world is available for $4.99 on both iOS and Android.
Gunman Clive (Android & iOS)
Gunman Clive is a sidescroller wherein you play a gunman, whose name I think we can safely assume is Clive.
You run around – well, not so much around as from left to right – shooting outlaws and thugs, jumping over infinitely deep pits, and attempting to avoid all manner of dangerous beasts (like ducks, pelicans, and bunnies).
You’d think it would be a fast-paced mad dash to the finish, but you need to take your time because if you happen to fall from a platform (which happens infuriatingly often) into one of those previously mentioned pits, you have to start from the beginning of the level (or, if you’re lucky, from an oddly placed checkpoint).
There’s fun to be had, and the aesthetic and sound deserve all the praise they can get, but the level design and controls come across as a little clunky.
Gunman Clive can be found for $1.99 for both Android and iOS.
