Ubisoft dedicated to South Africa

While the SA gaming scene is growing significantly, local gamers often feel that South Africa may be a marginalised or disregarded portion of the global gaming community.

Speaking with some top-tier triple-A developers, it’s safe to say that South Africa is an integral and important region for big-name game publishers, particularly that of Ubisoft.

“I believe [South Africa’s] completely on the radar,” said Robert Darryl Purdy, Far Cry 3’s Cinematics Director, when asked if South Africa is relevant to Ubisoft.

“Former Ubisoft members have always been coming to rAge, and for a country that you think wouldn’t have a huge gaming culture, events like rAge just show how important it is. There’s a very nice little pocket of a gaming market in South Africa,” Purdy continued.

When asked about the role of Far Cry in South Africa in particular, Purdy explained that “the Far Cry franchise has always had a lineage in South Africa and has appeared at rAge over the years”.

Nicolas Robin, who is the ZombiU associate producer, also emphasised Ubisoft’s attention on South Africa.

“Ubisoft is investing a lot in South Africa, as you can see with the Ubisoft presence at rAge,” Robin explained.

“Many Ubisoft developers are always in South Africa for interviews, and Ubisoft really cares about South Africa, and wants to see how the market evolves.”
