Various digital download portals are offering some compelling games to keep you busy this weekend. Alongside discounts on AAA, there are a number of indie gems well worth checking out, as well as classic titles going for a song.

Steam Specials

Steam has come roaring out the gates this weekend with some action-packed titles on special. The fantastic Borderlands 2 is discounted 50% to US$29.99. Borderlands 1 is 75% off, at US$7.49.

Counter-Strike fans that still haven’t grabbed Global Offensive now can, as its 50% off for US$7.49. Alternatively, the Counter-Strike complete bundle is going for US$14.99.

Indie Royale Evolved Bundle

The Indie Royale Evolved bundle has a couple of days left on the clock. It features an award winning, puzzle adventure game Unmechanical; atmospheric horror game The Path; squad based dungeon game, Krater, including the character DLC; the full game of the IGF China 2010’s winner, Sugar Cube: Bittersweet Factory; and an intricate scrolling puzzler, OIO: The Game.

Drop US$8 or more on the bundle and you will get an ambient electronic album from Tim Wright of CoLD SToRAGE, called ‘SLIPSTREAM [volume 1]’. The album features 64 bit digital re-mix / re-masters of Wright’s tracks from WipEout and WipEout 2097.

Kalahari DJ Hero specials

Once upon a time, Activision saw no bounds to the music peripheral game genre, and although it didn’t gain huge traction, DJ Hero was a solid and somewhat unique gaming experience.

Now you can live out your fantasies of being an international club DJ, as spotted by our friends over on TheDealBreaker, Kalahari is selling DJ Hero and DJ Hero 2 with the turntable control peripheral (Xbox 360,PS3, PS2, Wii) for R129.95 and R99.95 respectively.

Note that Kalahari’s free shipping is only for orders over R250.

Xbox LIVE Deal of the Week

The ZA Xbox LIVE Marketplace Deal of the Week includes a few cool Arcade titles, discounted 50% for Gold subscribers.

Hybrid is a multiplayer third person shooter running on Valve’s Source engine, developed by 5th Cell. It features a unique cover-control system, in which the player does not directly control their character, but selects cover areas to which the game moves the character automatically.

Two factions fight for world domination on a persistent world map in which the outcome of all the individual battles affects the overall course of the war. It’s going for 400 Ms Points to Gold subscribers.

Alan Wake’s American Nightmare and the original Orcs Must Die! are both going for 600 MS Points.

PlayStation Network

As always, over on the PlayStation Store, PS Plus subscribers have a range of discounts on offer on top of the usual free game offerings. This week Sleeping Dogs, Quantum Conundrum, and F1 Race Stars have entered the rotation.

There’s not much unexpectedly exciting over on PSN this weekend. Sony continues to run its PS Vita 1st birthday special, with discounts on a range of Vita titles. Perhaps of interest is the Alien Breed series on discount, as well as Anomoly: Warzone Earth.

DRM-free gaming specialist has busted out a Witcher series special to celebrate the announce of The Witcher 3, with both games going for $14.98, a saving of $25.00 on the standard pricing. You better move quickly on this one though, as the promo ends at 7PM South African time, 8 February 2013.

Check out MyGaming’s The Witcher 2 review (PC). is also running a Square Enix special, with 20 classics going for US77.80 overall – a saving of US$78.00 on the standard pricing. Specials off the beaten path always has some interesting and lesser known indie games on special. This week Dawn of Fantasy looks particularly compelling, for R155.92.
