With the recent release of Final Fantasy X and X-2 HD, all the memories of the epic and amazing boss battles from the game came flooding back to me. Granted, most of those memories involved me being destroyed, but they are ones I cherish most.
I have played Final Fantasy X four times, and X-2 three times and know everything about them – I’m sort of like a Yuna stalker, but I digress. What keeps me coming back for more are the boss battles, of which I have listed the most memorable ones below.
Warning, this contains a few spoilers, but if you’re here, you have probably played the game before.
Evrae – the Guardian Wyrm of Bevelle
This boss takes you by surprise in the skies above Bevelle. You are rushed to the deck of the Fahrenheit (the game’s airship) and this beast appears; while its looks beautiful and elegant, it is one of the hardest bosses in the game.
Tidus has to use his Trigger Command to bring the Fahrenheit closer and move it further away, which influences Evrae’s attacks on you. Not only do you not have Yuna’s summons to rely on, but Evrae will cast Stone Gaze when close to the party, which causes petrification.
He then moves onto using Swooping Scythe which will shatter your petrified characters. I will never forget having nowhere to go once you board the ship, I couldn’t even go and train my party, it was just terrible.
Yunalesca – the First Summoner
“It is better for you to die in hope than to live in despair. Let me be your liberator.” ~ Lady Yunalesca
What seems to be the beginning of a beautiful cut-scene to end your long journey, soon ends in disaster when Yunalesca decides to go all rogue on you.
This was one of my favourite boss battles – just when you think you have conquered the great warrior, she decides to transform into a new form with stronger attacks, a sexier design, and a greater desire to kill you.
Yunalesca casts Zombie on your party which stops you from being able to use potions and Cure spells, and she also curses your Aeons as soon as you summon them. On top of that, Megadeath is at her disposal, which is probably the worst attack in the game. I finally beat her after realising that I needed Holy attacks.
Seymour Flux
Oh Seymour, you pop up whenever we think we are safe from your cruel hidings. Although not too difficult to beat, when you encounter Seymour for the third time he summons Mortiorchis – a strange-looking knight creature – which changes things completely.
Seymour will use the Lance of Atrophy, inflicting Zombie on a party member, and he will then use Full-Life which will kill that party member instantly, so you have to act fast.
Seymour was one stylish guy and provided some amazing battle memories. He also had great hair.
Omega Weapon
Putting this boss on this list doesn’t do him justice. The Omega weapon was a lot harder in the PAL version of the game – the one we played in SA – with a staggering 999,999 HP.
Omega was not considered a super-boss in the US version due to its low health (only 99,999 – *yawn*), but he was still found at the end of the Omega Dungeon – the secret area littered with loads of tough enemies.
Omega Weapon probably took me about three hours to destroy – it is a long, tedious battle, one we have come to expect from every Final Fantasy Super Boss. His Nova attack is the most powerful ability Khimari could learn in the game and, if you do not have reflect equipped, could easily decimate your whole party.
His physical attacks also dealt around 4,000HP damage, and let’s not forget his Core Energy attack that normally dealt about 6,500HP damage to a single party member.
Omega Weapon also absorbed Elemental Magic, so those spell attacks were out of the question. Omega was so hard to defeat, he would top any “epic boss battles” list in gaming. Well, excluding Penance, maybe…
Bonus – Penance
Penance is Final Fantasy X’s super-duper-super boss, who can only be found after defeating all the dark aeons in the game. Those dark aeons being 10 more optional super-bosses with high HP, raging from 1 million – 8 million, who are way tougher than Omega, even.
If you think those boss battles are tough, though, with 12 million HP to get through (plus a move that deals 99,999 damage to your party), Penance is unmatched in the world of Spira.
Pfff, of course we never beat him – but he deserves a mention purely for existing.
