Is the Nintendo Wii U worth buying?

26 May 2014

It is time to face the facts about Nintendo’s latest console entry, weigh up the pros and the cons, and finally make a decision: to purchase, or not to purchase?

The Wii U is a great device. I have owned one for around a year, and it has provided me with some gaming experiences only possible with it.

We can go into details about how powerful it is and what it is capable of, but the Wii U has proved that it is far above the rest when it comes to great games regardless of hardware.

There are a few factors to consider before buying a Nintendo Wii U:

Wii U software lineup

The Wii U has been graced with some great games that have exceeded expectations.

Super Mario 3D World is one of the highest-rated games ever released, and Mario Kart 8 is a top-notch great racer reliving its glory days. Hopes are high for a new Super Smash Bros and The Legend of Zelda.

Although the Wii U has great games incoming and great games available right now, it has very little third party support as developers and publishers are slowly moving on without Nintendo.

Owning a Wii U will mean your console gathers dust every now and then while you wait for a new game, and sometimes the wait is quite long.

Yes, Nintendo has Virtual Console releases on their eShop, and that will grow into a massive library soon, but without its retail library the console is lacking a major feature. You don’t buy the Wii U just to play Gameboy games.

How much does it cost to set up a Wii U gaming station?

The Wii U faces another obstacle: the cost.

To get a Wii U you will need to fork out around R4,500. As with all Nintendo hardware, the games aren’t cheap and don’t get much cheaper over time, although the Wii U has the advantage of being backwards compatible with Wii games.

Backwards compatibility also plays a role in the cost of accumulating peripherals. If you do not own any Wii controllers, then expect to fork out R500 – R800 for a Motion Plus and a Nunchuck.

A Wii U console and a few controllers later, and you’ve easily spent over R6,000.

Why is the Wii U so great?

The Wii U is in limbo right now. We don’t know where it is going and how it is going to get there. Some say Mario Kart 8 will save it, but I would never buy a console for one game this late in its lifecycle.

Considering all its issues I have never regretted buying mine. It might stay off for weeks on end, but when it is on and I am playing a first party title I know that this is a great console that has produced experiences like no other, thanks to its hardware.

The Wii U is the perfect console for those who don’t have the cash to buy games every week; you get a game every month or so and you know that it will be a great game.

Pros

  • Nintendo quality in everything it offers.
  • Great games to experience.
  • You can play Wii games.
  • Virtual Console will grow substantially in the next few years.
  • Offers a gaming experience that is one of a kind.

Cons

  • Few games to play.
  • Comparatively expensive.
  • Buying into the back-catalogue of games will be expensive.
  • Extra peripherals costs if you don’t already own a Wii.
  • Its future is unpredictable.

i think it boils down to, if u want to get a console that a very few 3rd party developers are releasing titles on, even most of the big multiplatform titles are not on the wii u. Not forgetting also Nintendo of course keeps milking old titles instead of making new IPs. Id rather buy console were i know it will be getting new ips
