If you’re looking to upgrade your graphics card but your budget is a bit tight, you’ll need to shop around for the best deals on AMD and Nvidia graphics cards. You might not get a card made by a well-known, feature-rich brand such as Asus or Gigabyte, but sometimes these top-end graphics cards are a waste of money anyway.
Here are some of the best prices on the latest generation of mid-range graphics cards from South African retailers.
Nvidia
Nvidia’s latest 600 series of graphics cards released this year, and brought the fight to AMD in the gaming graphics market.
Below are the cheapest GT640 and GTX660 graphics cards from South African online retailers including LandmarkPC, Sybaritic, Rebeltech, Wootware, Prophecy, and Takealot. Graphics cards used were the cheapest of their respective model available from the store irrespective of brand.
| GT640 | GTX660 | |
|---|---|---|
| LandmarkPC | R1,323.54 (Asus) | R3,324.24 (PNY) |
| Sybaritic | R1,028.00 (KFA2) | R3,694.00 (KFA2) |
| Rebeltech | R1,137.00 (PNY) | R3,235.00 (PNY) |
| Wootware | R1,278.00 (Gigabyte) | R3,299.00 (Inno3D) |
| Prophecy | R1,045.84 (KFA2) | R3,501.17 (Inno3D) |
| Takealot | n/a | R4,380.00 (Gigabyte) |
Nvidia doesn’t have much on offer in the R1,000 to R3,000 price range, so we also included the GTX660 for those who want to spend a bit more for mid-range performance.
Sybaritic offered the cheapest GT640, which was KFA2 branded, and retailed for nearly 29 percent less than the most expensive GT640 on offer. A range of brands offered cheap GT640s, with Asus, PNY, and Gigabyte models also on offer.
For the GTX660, Rebeltech had the cheapest offering with a PNY branded unit that was over 35 percent cheaper than the most expensive GTX660 in the above table. Once again a range of different brands were closely competing to offer the cheapest GTX660 on the market.
AMD
AMD have responded to Nvidia’s 600 range of graphics cards with price adjustments, making them great options within their price class for the budget minded gamer. Below are the cheapest HD7750, HD7770, and HD7850 graphics cards from the above manufacturers:
| HD7750 | HD7770 | HD7850 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| LandmarkPC | R1,177.62 (Sapphire) | R1,503.66 (Sapphire) | R2,677.86 (Club3D) |
| Sybaritic | R1,178.00 (Sapphire) | R1,504.00 (Sapphire) | R2,633.00 (Sapphire) |
| Rebeltech | R1,124.00 (Sapphire) | R1,435.00 (Sapphire) | R2,513.00 (Sapphire) |
| Wootware | R1,207.00 (Sapphire) | R1,487.00 (Sapphire) | R2,599.00 (MSI) |
| Prophecy | R1,196.32 (Sapphire) | R1,522.36 (Sapphire) | R2,650.96 (Sapphire) |
| Takealot | R1,199.00 (Gigabyte) | R1,675.00 (Gigabyte) | R2,834.00 (Gigabyte) |
The most obvious element of the above table is the prominence of the Sapphire brand, being the cheapest option for 13 of the 18 prices collected. They were joined by models from Gigabyte, MSI, and Club3D.
Rebeltech offered the cheapest graphics card across all three models, and were 7.3 percent, 16.7 percent, and 12.7 percent cheaper than the most expensive HD7750, HD7770, and HD7850 in the above table respectively.
