RAM overclocking world record set

G.Skill is one of the world’s most talked about memory brands at the moment, with the company actively pursuing world records with overclockers to gain more support among enthusiasts.

They’ve been in the headlines recently with an astounding overclock on a Intel Haswell processor and Z87-based motherboard, thanks to a steady flow of LN2 (Liquid Nitrogen) and overclocker James “YoungPro” Trevaskis from TEAM.AU.

Using a Core i7-4770K engineering sample down-clocked to 1.8GHz and a single module of G.Skill’s TridentX DDR3-3000 memory, the team was able to overclock the motherboard’s BLCK multiplier to 150MHz and ring up the memory at a staggering 2,200MHz in the BIOS.

At an effective frequency of 4,400MHz, its one of the fastest modules ever recorded.

The memory was overclocked to 2,200MHz with 13-31-31-45 CL13 timings. While the numbers are certainly impressive, the loose timings combined with the under-clocked processor would result in a system that’s not fast by any measure, nor would it be feasible to run 24/7.

The standard settings on the TridentX module are DDR3-1500 with 12-14-14-35 CL12 timings, which is already at the very limit of what most regular, air-cooled Haswell builds will be capable of.

Regardless of its actual real-world performance, the figures are certainly impressive and gained TEAM.AU and G.Skill a top spot in the global rankings and first place for highest DDR3 SDRAM frequency. The validated overclock also has set a world record.
