New iPhone to be announced next week, probably

28 September 2011

In a move that has gadget enthusiasts and Apple fanboys in a frenzy, Apple has announced that a “major press event” will take place next week Tuesday, 4 October.

The event will kick off at 9PM local time, and is being hosted by new Apple CEO Tim Cook. The invitations that were sent out reportedly don’t specify exactly what is being announced, but the words “let’s talk phone” appear on them, which is more than a subtle hint that we are probably looking at a new phone announcement.

The rumour mill is currently rife with speculation regarding a next generation iPhone, which many are expecting to be out as early as October.

Digitimes reported a few months ago that component maker Pegatron had received an order to manufacture 15 million iPhone 5 units. The phones were apparently supposed to start shipping this month.

Other sources claimed that the iPhone 5 does not have any major updates over the iPhone 4, and we may see an iPhone 4S announced instead. Reported updates include a faster A5 processor and an eight megapixel camera, which would be quite a step up from the iPhone 4’s 5 megapixel camera.

The phone will also run iOS 5, which is expected to improve messaging and photo-sharing features.
