The recently revealed Playstation 4 will not be compatible with retail and digitally downloaded PS3 games.
The news comes from President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, who during a roundtable discussion with journalists, explained the complications of backwards compatibility.
Yoshida explained that retail game discs, along with the downloadable titles, such as Journey and the Unfinished Swan, will not work on the PS4 due to its complex architecture.
He did say that there is the possibility of emulation, as seen on the PS3 store with certain PS2 games, although “we’re not talking about our emulation plans as yet,” said Yoshida.
“There are two ways [to play legacy content]: emulation or cloud services [from Gaikai]. But native support [of digital games from PS3], no, sorry. It doesn’t work,” concluded Yoshida.
