PES 2017 review round-up – the best football game this year?

Whether you’re a FIFA or Pro Evolution Soccer fan, you would’ve circled September on your calendars is its the month we get treated to the latest iterations of the long-time footie franchises.

First up on the team-sheet is Konami’s PES 2017, which has already received some great press ahead of its launch, but now that it’s taken to the pitch, what are games journalists saying about the instalment?

Video Gamer – Score TBA

“PES 2017 is a wonderful football game that just begs to be played. Give me another 200 hours and I’ll tell you definitively how PES 2017 ranks against the series’ best.”

Gameinformer – 93/100

“The title is not perfect, but its gameplay is so natural that it feels like there’s little between you and what happens onscreen. It’s modes aren’t complete, but they are absorbing. Like anything that is loved, the answers may be incomplete but the feeling is total.”

XGN – 9/10

“PES 2017 is another step in the right direction. Konami thus capitalizes further on their strong formula. While not everything is perfect, the core gameplay is really on point: a real joy for lovers of football games.”

Metro – 9/10

“Of course, with FIFA 17 not out until September 29 it’s impossible to know how exactly it stacks up next to PES 2017. But based on demos and early feedback it’d be a genuine shock if it turned out to be as good as this. If it does though then all the better, as that would mean that two of the best football games ever made were released this year, instead of just one.”

Games Radar – 4.5/5

“A long-overdue return to form that finally surpasses Pro Evo’s PS2 glory days – and, assuming presentation woes are fixed, lays the foundations for an all-new footballing empire.”

Windows Central – 4/5:

“If you like Pro Evo, definitely give PES 2017 your time. Hell, even if you don’t but you’ve always been curious, give it a go. The trouble is that it’s not going to entice the FIFA crowd to jump ship. Which means Konami still has a hill to climb.”

Shop To – No score

“PES 2017 is one of the finest football games I’ve ever played. The action feels both authentic, innovative and really too addictive to put into words. The passing, keeper improvements, stunning animation and countless amount of tactical options all come together to make what is a really stunning football experience.”

God is a Geek – 10/10

“PES 2017 is bloody incredible. It’s a football game that feels like football in every single way. From the tackles to the passing, to the close control, to the scoring of wonderful goals. It’s everything football is in reality and in dreams. I’ve always said that FIFA is the Match of the Day of football games: you only get the highlights, where as in PES you get everything. This couldn’t be truer for PES 2017, which really, really could be the greatest football game ever made.”

Playstation Universe – 9.5/10

“If PES 2016 was the best entry in around a decade, then PES 2017 is arguably among the greatest in the series full stop. With extra care and attention paid to improving on many of its predecessor’s strengths, as well as tweaking and fixing adhered to its issues, PES 2017 comes out of it as a fantastic football game.”

Playstation Lifestyle – 9/10

“Pro Evolution Soccer 2017‘s Master League is one of the best career modes I’ve ever played in a sports game, and it’s backed up by incredibly solid gameplay. Once you look at the disappointing lack of team licenses, players will find one of the most rewarding sports games available.”
