Gamers have it best when it comes to Halloween. Sure, non-gamers can chill and watch a scary movie or show but we as gamers can live it in a video game and if you ask me, it is always more frightening doing that than just watching it. In a game, we connect with the character we are playing and because we are in control of this character we feel as if we are almost in their shoes. It is that reason why scary video games are much worse than movies and it is why I did this list of games you have to play this Halloween.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
One of the best games of 2017 is no doubt the terrifying Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. It was the best thing to happen to the series, taking it back to its horror roots by putting you into a freakshow mansion and letting you fend for yourself, and I loved every moment of it. I cried a little, and thanks to the VR support it was something that I had never experienced before.
Resident Evil 7 takes place in Dulvey Louisiana ad you play as Ethan Winters a man on the search for his wife who has suddenly disappeared. Etthen heads into a dilapidated mansion owned by the Baker family. This family as you guessed are not all that well and have been affected by this strange bacteria that makes them powerful and disgustingly-freaky. Expect jump scares, boss fights, lots of filth, and double all that if you are playing it in VR.
The Evil Within 2
The highly anticipated follow up to the 2014 Evil Within plays like the dream sequel we all wanted. Set three years after the events at the Beacon Mental Hospital, Sebastian Calleanos has left the police service as he searches for the truth about the mysterious organization called Mobius.
Sebastian has lost everything including his wife and daughter but he finds an opportunity to save his daughter and to do so he must dive into the mad world of STEM. The game features some high-octane horror scenes as Sebastian is only a man who needs to venture into this mad world and everything trying to kill him all while fighting off his own insanity. The Evil Within 2 is the perfect horror game for Halloween.
Set un an underwater remote facility where robots have become more human than ever the game follows the story of Simon Jarret as he finds himself in the facility with no way out. He now needs to try and make sense of all this and uncover just how and why these robots have become so life-like
It would not be a horror game if these robots were friendly which is not the case. They make it their objective to kill every living thing in the facility which includes Simon. This all means that Simon now needs to avoid death by these machines by sneaking around and solving the complex puzzles that are scattered throughout the facility. The worst part about this is that he is a man up against machine so he needs to use everything around him in order to survive.
Outlast was one of the original survival horrors of this generation and it is still the most frightening on the market. Armed with a camcorder, you play as a journalist who heads to a mental hospital to investigate the strange disappearances that have been occurring recently. You discover that there is much more going on than you could ever imagine and it is a giant sess pit of hell to put it lightly.
Outlast is a great survival horror that also makes you feel defenceless as you try and escape the hell hole of a hospital. Then it comes to the second game that is even bigger and freakier than the last. Instead of a hospital, you are placed on a farm where a cult lives and performs their killing. The same mechanics and gameplay are also present here, making it one of the most intense horror games in years.
After the controversial release of Alien: Colonial Marines, SEGA had to go back to the drawing board to reboot the series. Luckily Alien: Isolation was the best thing they ever did as the survival aspect of the game was truly horrific in all the right ways. Alien Isolation follows the story of Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley in her efforts to investigate the disappearance of her mother.
The game places you on the infamous Nostromo ship with the perfect specimen itself as you try and escape the giant haul. The thing is you are pretty defenceless and are only armed with a few tools to fight and a motion tracker that detects when Alien is nearby. Running and hiding away from the creature and using your environment to your advantage to stay alive is what makes the game so great. Run for your life – basically the motto of the game.
Until Dawn makes for a great social game as everyone can watch the game, which is basically an interactive movie, play out in front of them and freak out at the decisions that you need to make on a split-second basis. this interactive survival horror is set in Western Canada and centres around a group of eight teenagers who decide to vacation for a night in a cabin in the Blackwood Mountains.
Thing is that they are not alone. A masked maniac is on the loose who wants them dead and even more danger awaits them as a mythical breed of deadly creatures known as the Wendigo are also on the loose ready to eat, and their diet is human flesh. Sounds perfect for Halloween right?
Dead Space might have lost the plot a bit in the last game but the first two were epic horror games that redefined the third-person horror genre. Isaac Clarke is a hip engineer who must fight his way through a mining starship infesting by a deadly breed of alien. These Necromorphs have been brought to life with the help of an ancient evil artefact known as The Marker.
Isaac needs to use any possible means to escape the USG Ishimura which means fight for his life or even try and survive a drill into the eyeball. Dead Space is the perfect action horror to get your heart racing.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
One of the greatest horrors of the last generation was no doubt Amnesia: The Dark Descent. The game was all about immersion, discovery and living through the nightmare of Daniel’s experience as he wakes up in a desolate castle, barely remembering anything about his past.
The game made use of new lighting mechanics to bring the darkness into life and your own defence to the creatures and evil that lurked in the castle was the darkness itself. The problem was that the more you hid away, the crazier Daniel started to get so you had to take that into consideration too.
