CD Projekt Red announces single-player Gwent expansion

During an exclusive interview with IGN, The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red announced that it will be releasing Gwent: Rogue Mage today, 7 July 2022.

This single-player roguelike strategy game is a standalone expansion for Gwent, the multiplayer original, and will be released on PC, iOS, and Android.

“While Gwent multiplayer is a fantastic game for those who are looking for a great PvP multiplayer experience, we perfectly understand that many Witcher players loved the original mini-game of Gwent for totally different reasons,” said game director Vladimir Tortsov.

“With Rogue Mage, we aim to give this audience a reason to play modern-day Gwent in the format they prefer,” he added.

In addition to a more PvE-centred experience, Rogue Mage will return to the same version of the card game found in The Witcher 3.

In this version, players start with 12 cards, and they add more while exploring the procedurally generated map. On each run players earn experience, enabling them to obtain stronger cards during their next attempt.

The game uses the tale of Alzur, a mage working to create the first-ever witcher, as its narrative framework, but the developers didn’t design the game with a focus on plot and lore.

“Our goal with Rogue Mage’s story is to give players enough context on who Alzur is, what is his motivation, and the general setting of the world he lives in,” said Tortsov.

“We hope that players will get enough immersion to complement the gameplay-first formula, but we do not expect the story to be the main reason for players to appreciate this release”.

Tortsov estimated it will take players more than 30 hours to collect and do everything in the new game.
