A recent query to Steam Support has confirmed an unfortunate reality – you can’t bequeath your Steam library to anyone when you die.
This discovery was made by the user delete12345 on resetera, where they posted a screenshot of a query they made with Steam Support about transferring their Steam account via a will.
“I don’t plan on dying anytime soon, but when I do, could ownership of my Steam account be transferred via a will,” read the query from the user.
Sadly, the answer he received from Steam, while professional, was a negative.
“Unfortunately, Steam accounts and games are non-transferable. Steam Support can’t provide someone else with access to the account or merge its contents with another account,” said the reply.
“I regret to inform you that your Steam account cannot be transferred via a will.”
This means that when you eventually do pass on your Steam library will go with you to the grave.
Unless, of course, you leave your account login details to the desired inheritor – cutting out the legal middleman entirely.
This does, however, infringe on the Steam Subscriber Agreement which specifically prohibits revealing, sharing, or otherwise allowing others to use your password or Account except when specifically authorised by Valve.
Whether you elect to follow this stipulation is your prerogative but it is an interesting situation that most gamers likely have rarely considered.
