Solid state drives (SSDs) are appealing to consumers who want a high-speed operating system drive and those who seek a performance boost when loading large applications and games. Consumers in the market for an SSD may benefit from shopping around at various stores. While most retailers offer the same drives for similar prices, there are cases where one is significantly cheaper than the rest.

Unlike hard drives prices, which are now higher than they were in the third quarter of 2011 due to flooding in Thailand, SSD drive prices continue to drop, making the technology more accessible to the mainstream.

Below is a table with pricing (including VAT) of various capacity OCZ Agility 3 SSD drives, sourced from local retailers including, LandmarkPC, Sybaritic, IkonicIT, Rebeltech and Wantitall.

The first thing we notice from the above table is that no single site offers the best prices across the entire range of drives.

Pricing remains relatively close between the various online sites with the exception of Wantitall, which retails the drives for up to 66 percent more than competing websites.

Beyond this, Landmark and Sybaritic offer the widest range of SSD drives, while Rebeltech offers the cheapest pricing on two of the three SSD drives that they stock.

The table also shows that as capacity increases, the cost per GB decreases with the exception of the 180GB drive, which also seems to be the least readily available drive as only two retailers stock it.

If you’re in the market for a new SSD, shopping around can save you money especially if your go-to website for solid state drives is significantly more expensive than the competition.
