Worst PC games of 2012 (so far)

8 August 2012

2012 has been a surprisingly good year in terms of game quality. While each year always has it’s big blockbusters that rack up the 90-and-above ratings, there always seems to be some yings to mix up those yangs.

While the PC platform has seen some highly-rated releases like Diablo III, Tribes: Ascend, and Total War: Showgun 2, there really hasn’t been anything outrageously bad hitting PCs; but if we are to look up what has underwhelmed the most, there are some games that reminded us that there is a balance to everything.

The following games are listed according to their aggregated scores on both Metacritic and Gamerankings respectively.

Confrontation (51, 51.86%)

Dubbed as a tactical fantasy RPG, Confrontation follows a party of 4 characters who need to combine powers to overcome enemies.

Here’s Game Chronicles critical breakdown and in-depth analysis of Confrontation:

“At the end of the day, Confrontation just isn’t a very good game.”

Confrontation

Anna (60, 47.00%)

Anna is Dreampainters attempt at delivering a frightening horror experience. Game critics weren’t impressed. Especially that of Videogamer’s Lewis Denby:

“’Wasted opportunity’ is a phrase that keeps rearing its head, whether it’s thanks to the garbled translation, a broken hints system, or completely absent puzzle logic. Anna has some great ideas, but it’s the game’s carelessness that’ll stay with you, not its moments of inspired horror.”

Anna

Deep Black: Reloaded (39, 42%)

Deep Black: Reloaded’s goal was to take third-person shooting mechanics and dunk them into an underwater world where terrorism and freedom fighters collide; unfortunately it was likened to dying in water.

There’s no discernible ironic enjoyment to be gleaned from this game, and it’s certainly not fun-bad like Deadly Premonition. It’s just plain old depressing bad-bad. Like drowning” – IncGamers’ Paul Younger.

Deep Black: Reloaded

Fray (32, 35.17%)

Brain Candy were a little ambitious with their sci-fi game Fray, which attempted to fuse turn-based multiplayer elements with real-time strategy tactics. The results was less-than-appealing. Here’s the Escapist’s Andy Chalk’s take:

Fray is not ready for prime time. It’s not particularly exciting even when it works, and right now, it just doesn’t work.”

Fray

Gettysburg: Armored Warfare (22,20.8%)

Gettysburg: Armored Warfare sounds interesting, but unfortunately isn’t. This first-person shooter/strategy hybrid failed to impress anyone, even with the game being free-to-play.

Summed up by Gamer.nl:

“We can’t imagine that developers actually hate gamers, but after having played Gettysburg, we’re starting to doubt that. It’s ugly, not user-friendly and simply unfinished: these are just a few of the things that make this a horrible game.”

Who sent the internet nubs into this comment section? Diablo 3 as the WORST game of 2012? Goodness do you even know what a bad game looks like? That’s like saying wearing mismatched socks is the worst thing that could ever happen to you.

Diablo 3 was a huge disappointment but it isn’t the worst game of this year or of any year.
