DOOM has been out for a few days already and it has definitely left an impression on me, so much so that I could call it one of the best re-imaginings in years.
Sure, it is set in the same Doom world with the same guns and enemies, but somehow id Software manage to reinvent the title and reboot the series in a faster and flashier entry.
Doom 3 was a scarier title, using its in-engine lighting and sound effects to really frighten us to death, while the original Doom and Doom II featured both scares and action.
When we look at DOOM, it is very different from the previous games, and I think that its ability to re-create a franchise with great new mechanics and visuals should be inspiration for those in the industry who are stuck in limbo with their repetitive releases.
Here are a few games that might have their overall gameplay perfected, but could really use a reboot in a different direction.
Assassin’s Creed
Every year I play Assassin’s Creed, but I cannot help but feel that it has been stuck in limbo since Assassin’s Creed III. The series might be super-popular, but even the fans are getting tired of the same old games that do not incorporate anything new.
We went from boats, back to boats, to smoother parkour, which was buggy, and then we got a grapple hook. That was the length of its new features.
I say Ubisoft drops the darn Animus story in the game, and moves away from historical eras for a while. Could you imagine an Assassin’s Creed set in a fictional world where characters, lore, buildings, and weapons are all brand-new and unrelated to the series?
Ubisoft are a talented bunch of people who could create anything if they put their heart into it, and moving Assassin’s Creed away from the history books could mean that the game might finally find a new identity while still staying true to the series.
If CD Projekt Red can create a world as beautiful and well-imagined as the world we explored in the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, then there is really no reason why Ubsioft cannot create their own unique Assassin’s Creed experience without being held back by the historical aspect of the game.
Halo
Halo is a great series, but after the last entry I cannot help but feel that it needs to drop Master Chief off somewhere and leave him there to retire.
The game was marketed as the “Greatest hunt in gaming history”, meanwhile it lacked the hunt in the story altogether.
This just proved to me that 343 Industries really need something fresh to work with in order to bring out their true vision for the game.
When they took over Halo 4 from Bungie, it really showed that they knew what they were doing and they have the ability to create a solid futuristic shooter – but that shooter is just not the Halo we know.
With its dense story and massive galaxy, the possibilities to reboot the game are endless.
Personally, I am just over the same old guns and fighting the same covenant enemies, I really crave something fresh and new. Halo needs to do what id Software did for DOOM, take what we love about the franchise, and completely re-invent it.
Duke Nukem
Now, before you come and burn my house down for suggesting a Duke Nukem reboot, just hear me out.
The series has such potential to be great, it just needs to get past its pretentious characteristics, and focus on the reason why we loved the series back when Duke Nukem 3D was released.
Duke Nukem needs a new setting with larger open maps, bigger guns, bigger aliens, and the old Duke. After playing DOOM I could not help but wonder what if it could be reskinned as Duke Nukem, but instead of levels of Hell, we are on alien ships.
Duke Nukem was made up of great fast-paced shooting with large highly detailed maps, a huge variety of guns, and not to mention the great feeling of blowing aliens apart with rockets.
This is basically the new DOOM in a nutshell. Whoever owns the Duke Nukem franchise better be watching what is going on.
Call of Duty
I know everyone gets a bit picky when it comes to Call of Duty, especially after the latest Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare reveal which has left everyone a bit upset about the direction of the series.
But things do not have to be this way. Honestly, we are to blame for the success of the game in the first place, so what they give us now we just have to deal with.
If there is a game on this list that needs a reboot the most, it would have to be Call of Duty. Forget its brainwashed mercenaries, its hungry-for-power antagonist, and its unnecessary futuristic take on warfare.
Call of Duty needs to take a step back and look at what made the series so successful in the first place. Great characters, a gripping story, intense real-world gun fights, and its honest multiplayer.
Forget space ships and double jumps, add in a Pearl Harbor storyline, and cut out the macho Americanized marines.
We need to want to play Call of Duty for more than its FPS appeal, we want to be able feel for those in the game again, and fight for a cause which is worth fighting for.
